How Studio Hon’s Top Artists Recommend Using Second Skin Without Side Effects
f you've recently gotten a tattoo—or you're planning to—chances are you've heard of second skin film or tattoo healing film. It's one of the most talked-about products in the tattoo world, especially among artists and studios who prioritize clean, safe, and efficient healing.
At Studio Hon in Saskatoon, we see more clients asking about it every week. So we’ve created this complete guide to help you understand what it is, how to use it, and what to be careful about.
What Is Second Skin?
Second skin is a thin, breathable, transparent adhesive film that is applied over a fresh tattoo. It's designed to:
- Protect the area from bacteria and friction
- Lock in the skin’s natural moisture
- Allow the tattoo to heal in a more controlled environment
Some of the most common brands include:
- Saniderm
- Derm Shield (INK-EEZE)
- Recovery Derm Shield
- Tegaderm (originally a medical product)
- TattooMed® Protection Film
Each has slightly different adhesive strength and breathability. Some are softer and more flexible, while others are tougher and better for larger or high-friction areas.
How Do You Use Second Skin Correctly?
Using second skin the right way is crucial for healing and comfort. Here’s what we recommend:
- Wait at least 1–2 hours after getting tattooed before applying the film.
- Clean the tattoo gently with fragrance-free soap and let it fully dry.
- Cut the film to size—always leave extra space around the tattoo.
- Apply carefully, avoiding air bubbles and tension.
- Leave it on for up to 24–48 hours for the first layer. Some people choose to reapply a second layer for 3–5 more days.
At Studio Hon, we apply the first layer for you and provide detailed aftercare instructions for the rest of the healing journey.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even though second skin seems foolproof, here are a few things to watch for:
- Don’t apply it to dirty skin or over oozing plasma.
- Don’t stretch the film when applying—it will irritate the skin as it moves.
- Avoid keeping it on too long—trapped moisture can become problematic.
- Never use heavily scented lotion underneath or over it.
And if it itches excessively, feels hot, or becomes painful, take it off immediately.
What About Glue Allergies?
This is a big one. Some clients experience mild to severe irritation from the adhesive used in second skin products. While most people don’t have an issue, those with sensitive skin or a history of contact dermatitis may be more likely to react. The adhesive used in second skin films—especially stronger ones designed for long wear—can contain chemicals such as acrylates, which are known allergens for some individuals.
Symptoms of glue sensitivity or allergy may include:
- Redness or inflammation extending beyond the tattoo area
- Raised rashes, bumps, or hives
- Persistent itching, heat, or burning sensations
- Excessive fluid buildup under the film
- Peeling skin or blistering
If any of these symptoms appear, it’s best to remove the film immediately and gently wash the area with fragrance-free soap and water. Avoid reapplying a new piece of second skin and instead switch to traditional healing methods—such as breathable gauze and unscented ointment. When in doubt, reach out to your artist. At Studio Hon, we’re trained to spot allergic reactions early and help you modify your aftercare plan accordingly.
